Class 1 Blog 2026/2027

21.10.2026

On Wednesday, the whole school came together in the chapel for our Harvest Festival, beautifully organised by Mrs Pankhurst and the PEGs committee. It was a lovely opportunity to give thanks for the food we have, celebrate God’s creation and think about the importance of sharing with those who may have less than us.
Each class played a special part in the service. Class 1 did an amazing job performing the rhyme Chop, Chop, Choppity Chop, followed by Big Red Combine Harvester. Our youngest children did us proud, joining in brilliantly and bringing plenty of harvest cheer to the chapel.
Class 2 entertained everyone with The Great Harvest Court Case, where the Farmer, Sun, Rain, Soil, Bee, Shop Worker and Food Bank Volunteer all tried to convince the judge that they deserved the most thanks for the food we eat. In the end, the court decided that there could be no single winner because everyone has an important part to play.
Class 3 took us on a journey through the history of Harvest Festival, exploring traditions from the Bible through to Lammas and the beginnings of the modern Harvest Festival.  Did you know it was started in Cornwall? They finished by leading everyone in a thoughtful Harvest Prayer, giving thanks for creation and remembering those who may be facing difficult times.
There was also plenty of wonderful singing throughout the service, including Lord of the Harvest, Cauliflowers Fluffy, Autumn Days and For the Beauty of the Earth, before Rev Chris shared a few words with us.
A huge thank you to Mrs Pankhurst and the PEGs committee for organising such a lovely celebration, and to all our children for speaking, acting, singing and taking part so confidently. Thank you also to everyone who joined us and brought generous gifts for the Food Bank and to Sheila for playing the organ.

On Wednesday afternoon, Class 1 enjoyed a walk around the village, exploring different primary sources that helped us discover what Bridgerule was like in the past. As we walked, we compared old photographs with how the same places look today. It was wonderful to hear the children sharing their ideas, observations and thoughtful comparisons as they spotted changes and similarities. Their curiosity and enthusiasm really brought our history learning to life!

On Monday afternoon, Class 1 had a wonderful visit from Matt Thomas from the Castle Heritage Centre. He shared a collection of fascinating photographs showing how Bude has changed over the years and helped us become historians for the afternoon! The children carefully explored the images, spotting buildings that had been altered, disappeared, or changed over time.

We were especially interested to learn that the Shute Triangle in Bude was once the place where local people collected their water before homes had running water. The photographs sparked lots of thoughtful discussion and curiosity, and the children impressed us with their excellent observation skills. Everyone worked brilliantly together to put the photographs into chronological order and thoroughly enjoyed uncovering clues about Bude's past.

What another busy week of learning we have had! In English, the Year 1 and Year 2 children have been using noun phrases to describe their own wonderful inventions. It has been lovely to hear their imaginative ideas, from flying beds and Lego stations to teleporting machines!

The Reception children have been exploring their emotions through the book The Colour Monster. They enjoyed talking about different feelings before having lots of fun painting their own Colour Monsters to represent different emotions.

In PSHE, we have been learning about financial literacy. I have been really impressed by how confidently the children can explain the difference between things we need and things we want.

What a busy and exciting first three weeks we have had in Class 1! The Year 1 and 2 children began their English topic based on Rosie Revere, Engineer. They had great fun designing and creating their own model bridges before moving on to writing instructions for making a Cheese Hat and choosing interesting adjectives to describe different inventions.

In Science, we have been exploring different types of weather, and it has been amazing to see just how much the weather has changed since the start of term! Meanwhile, the Reception children have been learning all about autumn and thoroughly enjoyed last week’s story, The Leaf Thief!
